When will the Big One strike Salt Lake City?

Image
Here's the background.  Bluffdale, Utah, earthquake, magnitude 3.7 Time: 2019-02-15 05:09:51 (UTC-07:00)  Location: 40.463°N 111.948°W  Depth: 8.6 km Magna, Utah, earthquake, magnitude 5.7 Time: 2020-03-18 07:09:31 (UTC-06:00)  Location: 40.751°N 112.078°W  Depth: 11.9 km  Pursuing some thoughts I've had, I measured the approximate distance from Bluffdale quakes to the Magna quakes. It's about 33.8 km from the latitude/longitude locations of the 3.7 and 5.7 quakes. Incidentally, the line runs straight through the Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple. I drew out an equilateral triangle, and then started to measure to various locations around the area. Primarily I focused on distance from the Bluffdale quake as it was the first. It's about 33.8 km from the first Bluffdale quake epicenter to the southwest corner of the University of Utah, which happens to be the corner of the parking lot for the Rice-Eccles Stadium. That happens to be 19 km from the Magna quakes...

Recreational Marijuana...on the Doorstep in Utah

I started this post a couple days ago with only the title. I decided to finish it and was going to look up some past statements by the Church regarding the medical marijuana initiative, that will be on Utah's ballot in the upcoming election. I opened KSL and today's lead article (at least at this time) is Shutterstock.com LDS Church issues statement regarding Utah Medical Marijuana Initiative   https://www.ksl.com/?sid=46318852&nid=148&title=lds-church-issues-statement-regarding-utah-medical-marijuana-initiative Here's the article: "The proposed Utah Medical Marijuana Initiative is a matter of great controversy in this state. The negative effects and consequences of marijuana use on individuals, families, and society at large are well-known. There are also those who claim that it has medicinal benefits for those in some circumstances. "Accordingly, the Church asked a Salt Lake City law firm for a legal analysis of the proposed initiative t...

A Bunch of Small Tremors in Bluffdale

Image
In the last couple years that I've been somewhat regularly (at least 4 times a week) reviewing the USGS website for earthquake activity, https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/, I haven't seen this much activity in a single location in the Salt Lake valley: 19 smallish quakes in the Bluffdale area. I first noticed a smallish tremor reported last Wednesday (June 21), only a 1.4. This is too small for most people to even notice, and even the relatively few who might feel it, would question whether they actually felt it. (see the Wikipedia article for table of magnitudes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter_magnitude_scale) The day before there were three small tremors in the Heber City area, and one near East Carbon City. But near Bluffdale, there have been 19 tremors between June 21 and the morning of June 27, ranging from magnitude 0.8 to 2.1. I am not an earthquake expert, and while I don't think this is a sign of an immediate, impending large earthquake...
