Continued Decline
Many who feared the increased infringement on Constitutional rights through regulations, restrictions, limitations, taxes, etc. would be increased with Hillary Clinton are breathing a temporary sigh of relief with the election of Donald Trump to the presidency.
But while the encroachment from the federal level may be put on a back burner, it is not stopping.
Three states passed increased gun control laws.
California has added a ban on large capacity magazines, and allows authorities to now seize firearms from owners who are no longer allowed to own them. Additionally, a permit will be required to purchase ammunition.
Washington now allows guns to be "temporarily seized" from those who are considered a threat. Isn't that saying somebody is guilty until proven innocent? Seems like a very unconstitutional law.
In Nevada a background check is required on "nearly all" gun sales and transfers. The same law failed to pass in Maine.
Morality is further decreasing. Marijuana is has been legalized for recreational or medical use in several more states. Medical use is just a step towards recreational use. And despite what some people claim, marijuana is a gateway drug to users getting into more serious, illegal, and dangerous substances. It also has serious medical, health, and mental effects.
And, few are talking about the main reason marijuana is being legalized, particularly for recreational use, and that is the money. For now big, national banks have issues taking weed money, but that will change. Until then, the various weed states are and will be seeing increases to their taxes. As the politicians see green they will get more green in that they will want to get more money they can spend. Legalized gambling, including state lotteries, have the same problem.
As more states legalize marijuana the federal government will end up decriminalizing possession and use of the drug. Not necessarily making it legal, but no longer making it a crime to have money that originates from weed sales. This will have ramifications to those states who have not legalized weed. Most likely those others states will stop enforcement of minor possession and use, which will result in more users. And, eventually, probably sooner rather than later, legalization will happen.
Trump may be able to stop some of the moral hemorrhaging, but the states will go at it on their own.
Personally I think the legalizing of marijuana, first for medical use and then for recreational use, is a big sign of the the moral state of the state. A thought I've had is the first big earthquake that is expected to happen in Utah will probably come the year that marijuana becomes legal in Utah. And, most likely with legalized medical marijuana.
