Some things to be wary of

As kind of a follow up from my previous post, here are some things that members of the Church need to be aware of and repent of. The following verses are from Doctrine and Covenants section 56

14 Behold, thus saith the Lord unto my people—you have many things to do and to repent of; for behold, your sins have come up unto me, and are not pardoned, because you seek to counsel in your own ways.

15 And your hearts are not satisfied. And ye obey not the truth, but have pleasure in unrighteousness.

16 Wo unto you rich men, that will not give your substance to the poor, for your riches will canker your souls; and this shall be your lamentation in the day of visitation, and of judgment, and of indignation: The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and my soul is not saved!

17 Wo unto you poor men, whose hearts are not broken, whose spirits are not contrite, and whose bellies are not satisfied, and whose hands are not stayed from laying hold upon other men’s goods, whose eyes are full of greediness, and who will not labor with your own hands!

First, too many members do not heed the counsel given to them by the prophets, both ancient and modern. Too many justify why something doesn't apply to them, or try to explain away how the prophet (or apostle or other leader of the Church) is behind the times.

Too many members do not obey the truth and take "pleasure in unrighteousness." These could be pet sins that one is not willing to give up. Or maybe it's a sin that the person justifies away by saying to themselves that "it's not hurting anyone."

Far too often we see those who have riches of this earth hoarding their wealth, ever increasing their greed, pride, and dissatisfaction with what they have.

And too many of those who are poor are just as wicked. Many of the poor seek to have things given to them because of their laziness, sense of entitlement, and greed. The end of verse 17 describes too many who are receiving government welfare, who are capable of working but do not want to.

Many politicians, more so on the liberal/Democrat side, play towards those who do not have as much as the rich. They play on the greed of most people, and the desire to have everything given to them. They build up the sense of entitlement. Even many marketing campaigns use the "you deserve" ploy to get people to feel like they needs something.
