Fauci's statement supports why the economy should reopen

Yesterday I was listening to some of the replay of Senator Mitt Romney's questions to Dr. Fauci during a hearing of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.

Senator Romney asked Dr. Fauci about how likely a vaccine will be available within a year or two.

Dr. Fauci stated:

"This virus induces an immune response, and the overwhelming majority of people recover. The very fact that the body is capable of spontaneously clearing the virus tells me that, at least from a conceptual standpoint, we can stimulate the body with a vaccine that will induce a similar response. So although there is no guarantee, I think it is clearly more likely than not."

A summary of Dr. Fauci's statement is on other sites including USAToday

So here's my question, if, in Dr. Fauci's words, "the overwhelming majority of people recover" from COVID-19, why are we continuing to keep the economy closed?

It would seem more practical, more prudent to open the economy and place restrictions and protections on the most vulnerable populations.

Closing the economy has had severe physical, emotional, and mental health effects on far more people than have died, or even contracted, the novel coronavirus COVID-19.

It may have been a good experiment to try closing the economy down for a couple weeks, but the experiment has had extreme repercussions.

If the desire of politicians and even health departments was really for the good of the majority then the economy would open, because keeping things in lockdown isn't good for the majority.

Some elected officials believe they are doing what is right. But there are many who are learning they like and crave the control and power they think they have.

And Pelosi and other liberal democrats (including progressives and socialists) like the opportunities they have to spend more money and to push to spend more money. They like the lockdown orders because it makes people more dependent on them and the government.

If Pelosi and liberals really want to do what is best for the people they represent then they would acknowledge that the lockdowns and closed economy is hurting more people more deeply and substantially in all areas of life than COVD-19 will.

But they won't. They thrive on instilling fear and increasing dependence of the people on them and the government.
